A clean refrigerator keeps your food fresh, reduces odours, and helps your appliance run more efficiently. The good news? You do not need any fancy products or hours of effort. Follow these six simple steps and your fridge will look and smell like new.
Step 1: Empty the Fridge Completely
Start by taking everything out, shelf by shelf. This is also a good time to check expiry dates and discard anything that has gone bad. Place perishables in a cooler or insulated bag so they stay fresh while you work. Removing everything at once makes cleaning far easier and ensures you do not miss any corners.
Step 2: Remove and Soak the Shelves and Drawers
Take out all removable parts including glass shelves, plastic drawers, and door bins. Let them soak in warm soapy water for 10 to 15 minutes. Avoid using hot water on cold glass shelves as the sudden temperature change can cause them to crack. While they soak, move on to cleaning the interior.
Step 3: Wipe Down the Interior
Mix one tablespoon of baking soda with one litre of warm water. This simple solution is safe, effective, and completely odour-free. Dip a microfibre cloth or sponge into the solution and wipe down all interior surfaces including the walls, ceiling, and floor of the fridge. Pay extra attention to corners, door gaskets, and the area around the vegetable drawer where spills tend to collect. For stubborn stains, apply a small amount of the solution directly and let it sit for a few minutes before wiping.
Avoid using harsh chemical cleaners inside your refrigerator as residue can transfer to food.
Step 4: Clean the Shelves and Drawers
By now your shelves and drawers have had a good soak. Scrub them gently with a soft sponge, rinse thoroughly, and dry with a clean towel before placing them back. Make sure no moisture remains, especially under rubber seals or along the edges of glass shelves.
Step 5: Do Not Forget the Exterior
The outside of your fridge collects dust, fingerprints, and grease, especially around the handle and the top. Wipe down the exterior with an all-purpose cleaner or a damp cloth with a drop of dish soap. For stainless steel fridges, wipe in the direction of the grain to avoid scratches. Clean the top of the fridge as well since it tends to gather a surprising amount of dust and grease over time.
Also pull the fridge slightly away from the wall and vacuum or wipe the coils at the back if accessible. Dusty coils make your fridge work harder and can increase electricity consumption.
Step 6: Reassemble and Organise
Once everything is dry, place the shelves and drawers back in their positions. Before restocking, wipe down jars, bottles, and containers with a clean cloth to remove any stickiness or residue. Group similar items together so your fridge stays organised longer. Place a small box of baking soda on one of the shelves to absorb odours between cleanings.
How Often Should You Clean Your Refrigerator?
A quick wipe-down once a week and a deep clean every one to two months is a good routine to follow. If there is a spill, clean it up immediately to prevent stains and bacterial growth.
Quick Tips to Keep Your Fridge Cleaner for Longer
- Store leftovers in sealed containers
- Line the vegetable drawer with a paper towel to absorb moisture
- Label and date items so nothing gets forgotten at the back
- Do not overpack your fridge as good airflow keeps food fresher
Keeping your refrigerator clean is one of the simplest things you can do to maintain a healthier kitchen. A little effort every few weeks goes a long way in keeping your food safe and your appliance running well.
